Most of stencil are now made at Shirako, Ise area.
The stencil called “Shirakogata” has been most popular and superior one in Japan for 500 years (at the end of Muromachi period) Shirako & Teraya villages (Suzuka-city at present) were dominated by "Kishu-han" (Tokugawa families of Shougun) in Edo period, So the stencil business became very popular including cotton (shipped to Edo) and sea foods (delivered to Nara & Kyoto) sales business because of a center of transportation (big port as well as main road to Edo, Nara & Kyoto).
The prosperity of stencil business was continued until Meiji period however the technique of stencil was introduced all over Japan mainly at Kyoto.
At present, 100% of original paper called "Shibu-gami" is produced at Shirako and Teraya.
